Liftra to Demonstrate LT1500 Installation Crane at Full Scale

Liftra is preparing to demonstrate its LT1500 Installation Crane at full scale for the first time. The tower-climbing crane introduces a new approach to installing increasingly tall wind turbines, combining high lifting capacity with a compact and modular design.
Engineering Innovation for the Next Generation of Wind Turbines
The LT1500 has been developed in response to a key challenge facing the wind industry: as turbines become taller and components larger, installation requires greater lifting height and capacity, while transport and site requirements remain important constraints.
Rather than relying on a conventional large crawler crane to reach hub height, the LT1500 connects to the turbine tower and climbs into position using its own winching system. Building on Liftra’s proven Self-Hoisting technology, it is designed to reach hub heights above 200 m and components weighing up to 120 t. Its compact and modular design requires only 7-9 truckloads and a crane pad area of less than 900 m², helping reduce transport requirements and on-site civil works.
The LT1500 has already attracted strong interest across the wind industry. As the project moves closer to full-scale demonstration, Liftra is engaging with developers, turbine manufacturers and other industry stakeholders on how the technology can support future projects.
From Engineering Concept to Full-Scale Crane
Following several years of engineering, development and testing, Liftra will demonstrate the LT1500 at full scale in Aalborg, Denmark, on 21 September.
The demonstration will bring together wind turbine manufacturers, developers, customers and other industry stakeholders to see the crane operating at full scale and gain insight into the technology and its potential applications.
“With the LT1500, our ambition is not simply to build a larger crane. We have looked at the installation challenge differently and developed a solution around the turbine itself. Reaching the full-scale demonstration is therefore a crucial milestone – both technically and in our work with customers and industry partners to prepare the technology for future projects,” says Liftra CEO Per Fenger.
Industry collaboration in Focus at WindEnergy Hamburg
Following the full-scale demonstration in Aalborg, Liftra will head to WindEnergy Hamburg 2026, exhibiting as part of the Danish Pavilion in Hall B1, Stand 312.
The LT1500 will also be the subject of Vattenfall’s roundtable discussion, “Climbing Crane: Accelerating Innovation Through Collaboration,” on 23 September at the Vattenfall booth, Hall 6, Stand 335. The discussion will bring together Per Fenger, CEO of Liftra; Ulrika Ritzen, VP Onshore Wind at Vattenfall; and Juan Furones, SVP Product Line Onshore at Vestas.
